“Making Sex Education Compulsory in Nigerian High Schools: A Call to Action
As a student affairs practitioner, I am compelled to address a critical issue affecting the lives of Nigerian youths. The absence of comprehensive sex education in high schools has led to a plethora of problems, including unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and HIV/AIDS. It is imperative that we take immediate action to introduce sex education as a compulsory subject in all high schools across Nigeria. The alarming rate of teenage pregnancies, particularly among 11-15-year-olds, is a stark reminder of the need for sex education. Many young girls are forced to drop out of school due to unplanned pregnancies, truncating their educational journey and potential. This not only affects their future but also perpetuates cycles of poverty and dependence. Compulsory sex education in high schools can: 1. Reduce unintended pregnancies and promote informed reproductive choices 2. Prevent the spread of STIs, including HIV/AIDS 3. Encourage healthy relationships and consent 4. Foster a culture of openness, reducing stigma and shame 5. Empower young people to make informed decisions about their bodies and lives 6. Address gender-based violence and promote equality 7. Provide accurate information, dispelling myths and misconceptions 8. Support the development of life skills, such as communication and negotiation 9. Enhance overall well-being and mental health 10. Contribute to a more informed and responsible citizenry. Furthermore, introducing sex education can: 1. Align with global best practices and international standards 2. Support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 4 (Quality Education) 3. Demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to the health, education, and empowerment of its youth. I urge the Minister of Education and the Nigerian Government to take the following steps: 1. Develop a comprehensive sex education curriculum for high schools 2. Provide training and resources for educators to effectively deliver sex education 3. Ensure implementation and monitoring of sex education programs nationwide 4. Engage with stakeholders, including parents, religious leaders, and community members, to address concerns and promote support. Let us work together to equip Nigerian youths with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to navigate their reproductive health, relationships, and lives. The future of our nation depends on it.”
