A Tragic Wake-Up Call: Ensuring Safe Learning Environments for All

February 26, 2025

As we mark the sixth day since the devastating incident at the Government Girls Science Technical College in Potiskum, Yobe State, our hearts still heavy with grief, we cannot help but reflect on the tragic events of February 20th, 2025. On that fateful day, a classroom block collapsed during school hours, trapping several female students under the rubble. The incident resulted in the loss of one precious life and left several others injured, with many still receiving medical attention.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring safe and well-maintained learning environments for our children. As a society, we have a collective responsibility to guarantee that our schools provide a secure and supportive space for students to learn, grow, and thrive. The collapse of the classroom block at the Government Girls Science Technical College is a tragic wake-up call, urging us to take immediate action to prevent such incidents in the future.

In the aftermath of this devastating incident, we urge school owners, proprietors, and proprietress to prioritize the structural integrity and safety of their buildings. This includes conducting thorough inspections to identify potential safety hazards, implementing regular maintenance and repair schedules to prevent structural failures, and ensuring compliance with building codes and safety regulations. Furthermore, we call on ministers and commissioners of education to work closely with school administrators to ensure regular supervision and inspection of school buildings.

The collaboration between government agencies, school administrators, and proprietors is crucial in preventing such incidents and ensuring accountability. In the event of future incidents, proprietors and proprietress will be held responsible, and it is our collective duty to ensure that our schools are safe and secure.

As we mourn the loss of the student who tragically lost her life, our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and the entire school community. We also wish a speedy recovery to those injured and hope that they will soon return to their normal lives.

In the face of this tragedy, we must come together as a society to demand better from ourselves and from those responsible for providing safe learning environments. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and future generations to ensure that our schools are safe, secure, and supportive spaces for all.

Immediate Action Required:

1. Conduct thorough inspections of school buildings to identify potential safety hazards.

2. Implement regular maintenance and repair schedules to prevent structural failures.

3. Ensure compliance with building codes and safety regulations.

4. Provide training for school staff and students on emergency response procedures.

5. Establish clear lines of communication and accountability between government agencies, school administrators, and proprietors.

Let us work together to create safe and supportive learning environments for all students. We cannot afford to wait; the lives and well-being of our children depend on it.
